CDC Admits There is No Proof COVID-19 is Airborne Virus and They Have Been Misleading the Public All Along

CDC Admits There is No Proof COVID-19 is Airborne Virus, and They Have Been Misleading the Public All Along http://dlvr.it/RhLhHr I like how the CDC has about given every answer they can think of thus far. At this point, I do not believe anything that the CDC says. If you ignore them, you are un-informed, but if you listen to them, you are misinformed. One thing we can be sure of is that there is some major league trickery being perpetrated on this planet. The lives of all of humanity are on the line, and the organizations that we are supposed to trust are just toying with us. I hope the world wakes up. We have to stand up to these guys. If they are willing to destroy it all, we must stand up to them and force their hand. Otherwise, we will live on our knees—That's not an option for some.

Ballots in Pennsylvania Were Found in the Trash. They Were All Votes for Trump

Ballots in Pennsylvania Were Found in the Trash. They Were All Votes for Trump http://dlvr.it/RhHw0g Here is another story, one of many. I could post stories all day about the start of what we will see for the next month or two. Election fraud in the home of the free is out in the open now. America, won't let this happen. Our government will soon not even be an illusion of by the people for the people if this is allowed. The next step is a communist boot in the back of your neck. It will be all out in the open, and there will be nothing you can do but obey. This is now America. It is not quite over yet, though. Patriots haven't stepped up yet. They are like sleeping giants from what I hear. You will know it when they decide to jump into this fight. When they wake up, they are kind of loud.

Federal prosecutor announces inquiry into nine discarded ballots cast for Trump

Federal prosecutor announces inquiry into nine discarded ballots cast for Trump http://dlvr.it/RhHtkf This is a bad sign and a harbinger of what's to come. This is the year everyone finds out how deep the corruption of our system goes. The left seems not to have any problems using whatever tactics necessary. It seems like they are guilty of something that they will do anything to keep quiet. The only problem is that everyone that does any digging already knows what they are guilty of. Just because the mainstream media won't report, it doesn't sweep it under the rug. Welcome to the great awakening. Nothing can stop what is coming.

Trump, Melania Pay Respects to Late Justice Ginsburg at Supreme Court

President Trump paid his respects to the late Justice Ginsburg and was met with a political message from the crowd. How people can be so disrespectful to our president is beyond my comprehension. He has nothing but good things to say about the late Ginsburg, and a funeral is no place to protest. It is just disrespectful and shows the morals of the left. You can't wish away the constitution is the moral of this story. Go back to your mother's basement, kids. Trump, Melania Pay Respects to Late Justice Ginsburg at Supreme Court http://dlvr.it/RhHFDP

Beware The Great Bifurcation

The original working title for this installment of The Jackpot Chronicles was “Mandatory Pollyanna”. That’s the one where central planners and bureaucrats manage to “save” the global financial system yet again, but at a cost of undertaking an LBO of the entire economy and running it as a centrally planned utility. I’ve decided to rename this scenario “The Great Bifurcation”, because should it come to pass,  I think the the inevitable result  would be the emergence of an even more pronounced and starkly divided Two Tier Society. It is arguable that the groundwork for TGB was laid as far back as the adoption of central banking and fiat currency, which gave asymmetric advantages to the class of elites closest to the monetary spigots: This was known as far back as the late 1700’s when Richard Cantillon wrote his treatise on Economic Theory… “An 18th century French banker and philosopher named Richard Cantillon noticed an early version of this phenomenon in a book he wrote called ‘An Essay on Economic Theory.’ His basic theory was that who benefits when the state prints a bunch of money is based on the institutional setup of that state. In the 18th century, this meant that the closer you were to the king and the wealthy, the more you benefitted, and the further away you were, the more you were harmed. Money, in other words, is not neutral. This general observation, that money printing has distributional consequences that operate through the price system, is known as the “Cantillon Effect.” Why Wall St. Gets a Bailout and You Don’t, by Matt Stoller Today it’s not the King’s courtiers who benefit, it’s who is in closest proximity to The Fed: primary dealers, investment banks, hedge funds, private equity, venture capitalists and corporate monopolists. Even in Cantillon’s day, when he enumerated the various ways new money could come into the kingdom, it was all the result of actual money entering via conquest, trade, mercantilism, or taxation. The choke point then under any scenario was the sovereign, and those in court tended to do well whenever the money supply increased. Now, imagine having the ability to print “value” out of thin air, and then exchange it for equity stakes in the means of production, the way central banks can today. Imagine being able to do that for the world’s reserve currency. Then try to imagine that power and wealth diffusing through society equally and proportionately. You can’t, because it doesn’t. It won’t. It never has. So today we’re hit with this pandemic, which I’ve said before isn’t the cause of the economic dark age we’re now entering but a catalyst of it. This unidirectional wealth transfer has to be spun in a way that the marks (the subjects) don’t understand they are being robbed blind. They have to want to be leached into poverty. They have to demand it. This is the underlying logic of ideas like Universal Basic Income, and descriptive rationalizations like Modern Monetary Theory. To the rabble, it looks like the government finally set aside any silly notions of fiscal prudence in order to further build out the welfare state for the good of society. There is an entire segment of the population who is now taking home more money from government stimulus and bailouts than they were when they were “working” for a living. What is really happening however, is that the fiat currencies which are being printed into existence and distributed to the underclass in the form of various stimulus and aid packages are essentially being transformed into a kind of “company scrip”....[    ] The post Beware The Great Bifurcation appeared first on NewsCetera.

How Dixie cups became the breakout startup of the 1918 pandemic

In 1907, Boston attorney Lawrence Luellen created a cup. It wasn’t made of glass or metal—the norm at the time. Instead, it was made of paper so it could be thrown away after use. While not earth-shattering in our current context, in the early 1900s there were no disposable paper tissues or paper towels. A cup made of paper was a novel idea, one with a noble goal: Luellen hoped his paper cups could help stop the spread of disease. What makes this century-old startup story especially poignant today is that Dixie cups, as they came to be known, achieved only moderate growth for 10 years until the Spanish flu of 1918 made disposable cups a necessity and helped the Dixie cup become a household name. In 2012, Smithsonian Magazine even called the Dixie cup a “life-saving technology” that helped stop the spread of disease. Before the Spanish flu hit, the company behind Dixie cups was a scrappy startup. But just as we’ve seen with the teleconferencing phenom Zoom in the COVID-19 era, Dixie cups shot to popularity with the arrival of a major health crisis. That’s why the Dixie cup’s story is instructive for startups struggling to make ends meet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Embedded in the history of Dixie cups are important lessons for how startups can scale when times are good—and survive when times are hard. WHEN TIMING ISN’T RIGHT, SURVIVE UNTIL IT IS As any VC will tell you, timing is one of the crucial stars that must align for a startup to succeed. But what if timing isn’t right for a startup? Chances are, timing won’t be exactly right. To succeed, you must survive until it is. When Luellen invented the paper cup, which he originally named the “Health Kup,” the timing wasn’t great either. Communal metal drinking cups known as “tin dippers” were commonplace. A single “tin dipper” could be shared by hundreds of different people. If that sounds gross, it was. But scientists were only just beginning to understand how contagion was spread. As a result, when Luellen and his cofounder Hugh Moore went to market with their paper cups, the product didn’t fly off the shelves. It’s hard to sell a solution to a problem people don’t know they have. BECOME A B2B OR B2BC BUSINESS Educating a market takes time and money, two especially scarce resources for a startup. When awareness is the problem, targeting business customers can make the educational process less daunting. While sales cycles might be longer, order sizes are significantly larger and more predictable. When Dixie cups originally failed to resonate with consumers, Luellen and Moore refocused their efforts on businesses. They developed a free-standing dispenser that was sold to businesses, which could sell a Dixie cup of water for a penny. Once a business bought a dispenser, Luellen and Moore could depend on revenue from the repurchase of cups. This helped the company survive during what was a slow period of adoption. It also introduced Dixie cups to thousands of workers who would soon begin buying them in stores for home use. MEET THE MOMENT One of the most important skills for any startup is the ability to adapt. As we’ve seen in the most extreme case with COVID-19, factors completely out of a startup’s control can reverse its fortunes, for better or for worse....[   ] The post How Dixie cups became the breakout startup of the 1918 pandemic appeared first on NewsCetera.

Bolivian worker union marches against election delay as tensions mount

July 28, 2020 By Daniel Ramos LA PAZ (Reuters) – A major Bolivian union led a protest march in the highland city of El Alto on Tuesday, opposing a delay to the country’s presidential election as tensions mount over the vote that will decide the country’s political future. Thousands of people joined the march organized by the powerful Bolivian Workers’ Center (COB), an umbrella group representing various industries. They carried banners criticizing the conservative interim government, which read “We demand elections” after the ballot was pushed to Oct. 18 due to the coronavirus. The vote, a re-run of a fraught election last year that sparked violent protests leading to the downfall of long-term leftist leader Evo Morales, is a tussle between the country’s socialist party and a fragmented conservative flank. Morales, exerting his political influence from exile in Argentina, has called for the election to be held on Sept. 6 as previously planned. The electoral tribunal postponed the date because coronavirus infections are expected to peak in coming months. “The problem in the country is not coronavirus, the problem is this incapable government that has not paid attention [to the pandemic] in a timely manner,” said COB union head Juan Carlos Huarachi. The march ended in a council of workers declaring an indefinite general strike and mobilizations all around the country. The COB said the interim government of led by presidential candidate Jeanine Añez had used the pandemic to extend power and persecute supporters of Morales’ Movement for Socialism (MAS). “If we join together as miners, peasants, the middle class and El Alto, we can be explosive,” said Huarachi. Yerko Núñez, the minister of the presidency, responded to the demonstrations by accusing MAS presidential candidate, Luis Arce, and union leaders of committing “crimes” against public health by promoting the mobilizations. “Let it be clear, the leaders of MAS, the coca growers of Chapare, the Bolivian Workers’ Center and all those who called for this mobilization will be solely responsible for infections that occur and the collapse of the health system,” he said. Bolivia has recorded over 70,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with over 2,600 deaths. (Reporting by Daniel Ramos; Writing by Adam Jourdan; Editing by Aurora Ellis)

This Kid Spent 9 Years Building An Incredibly Detailed Model Of A Boeing Jet From Paper. Watch!

Luca Iaconi-Stewart says he’s “a crazy guy who loves aviation.” That might be an understatement. The 25-year-old spent the last nine years in his parents’ house building an exquisitely precise replica of an Air India Boeing 777 jet made entirely from cut-up paper folders. The plane is complete down to details like bolts, hydraulic pipes and hinges. It has amenities like seatback entertainment systems, food carts and also the hidden crew “rest module” that most passengers, even those in first class, never get to see. “I like the way the planes look and I love the engines,” Iaconi-Stewart says. The Air India 777 uses the most powerful jet engines ever built, the GE90-115B. The engine, designed by GE Aviation, is also the first jet engine to use fan blades made from a special carbon-fiber composite. The light material allowed engineers to expand the engine’s diameter to 134 inches and give it more oomph. “The blades are just beautiful,” Iaconi-Stewart says. “I studied them at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where they are part of the design collection.” GE Reports talked to Iaconi-Stewart before the Paris Air Show, which starts next week. Chile’s President Pinera removes interior, foreign, defense ministers

July 28, 2020 By Aislinn Laing and Natalia A. Ramos Miranda SANTIAGO (Reuters) – Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has reshuffled six ministers, including from the key interior and foreign portfolios, as he seeks to shore up his fractious ruling coalition following a rebellion over a controversial pensions bill passed last week. The second reshuffle in nine months of almost all of the president’s inner political circle save the finance ministry saw a swing towards conservatism in the political affiliations of new ministers, also in the defense, social affairs, presidency and communications portfolios. “I call on this new cabinet and all of the Chile Vamos coalition to begin a new stage for our government and for our country, with a true constructive spirit, conviction, unity, faith and hope,” Pinera said at a swearing-in ceremony at the presidential palace in the capital Santiago. The reshuffle comes as the centre-right president faces his toughest year in office so far, with massive social protests from October to December and the combined economic and social blow of the coronavirus outbreak that began in March. Last week, both senators and deputies from the ruling Chile Vamos coalition backed an opposition bill for citizens to be allowed to draw down 10% of their pensions from the country`s private retirement system. The government staunchly opposed the move, saying it would fund relief for hard-hit citizens from the public purse, and warning about the longer-term impact on profitability and already-low average payouts of pensions as well as on the economy. Interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel, who doubles as cabinet chief, took the fall for failure to stop the pensions rebellion and was replaced by senator Víctor Perez, a member of the far-right UDI party, which is part of the ruling Chile Vamos coalition. Perez will be the third interior minister in nine months. Pinera also replaced his health minister in June. (Reporting by Aislinn Laing; editing by Jonathan Oatis and Bernadette Baum)

Baseball Player Won’t Kneel During National Anthem: “I Can’t Kneel Before Anything But God”

If fans flipped on their TVs hoping for an escape from the madness of 2020, the return of major league baseball wasn’t it. Americans who tuned in to Friday’s season openers, desperate for a return to something normal, were forced to witness another protest: the players’. In some ballparks, like the Washington Nationals, the politically-charged messaging was everywhere — from the Black Lives Matter “unity” ribbons to the “BLM” stenciled on the back of the pitchers’ mound. But when the entire league is kneeling, it only takes one player to stand out. And for the Giants’ Sam Coonrod, there was never any question. “I’m just a Christian,” he said after the game. “I don’t think I’m better than anybody,” he tried to explain. “I chose not to kneel. I feel if I did kneel, I’d be a hypocrite. I don’t want to be a hypocrite.” Unlike a lot of Americans, Sam knows that there’s a lot more to the Black Lives Matter organization than the slogan. “[I] just can’t get on board with a couple things I’ve read about Black Lives Matter. How they lean towards Marxism and … they said some negative things about the nuclear family.” At the end of the day, Sam explained, he doesn’t mean any “ill will.” But it’s time, he would argue, for our country to realize what’s really behind the hashtag. Ordinary people in this nation, well-meaning Christians even, want to believe that Black Lives Matter is just a crusade for racial justice. That it’s a peaceful group, if not a passionate one, fighting for civil rights. They buy into the sentiment, not realizing that what they’re really adopting in those three words is a violent revolution with one goal: annihilating America. This isn’t the stuff of posters and wristbands. These are extremists with a profoundly chilling vision. And they’ll be the first ones to tell you so. Co-founder Patrisse Cullors has been surprisingly open about the group’s real agenda for years. “We are trained Marxists,” she warned. “We are super-versed on ideological theories.” During a candid interview in 2015, Cullors explained that BLM has “really clear direction as to where we want to take this movement. I don’t believe it’s going to fizzle out,” she said, somewhat prophetically. “It just gets stronger…” And violence is just one way they intend to be heard. “If this country doesn’t give us what we want,” Greater New York Black Lives Matter President Hawk Newsome warned, “then we will burn down this system and replace it.” But it might surprise the majority of Americans to know that “what they want” isn’t an end to police brutality or racism. It’s an end to freedom, speech, religion, and true equality. “All you shopkeepers putting signs in your stores, you schoolteachers programming your students to lock arms, you men and women of the cloth preaching about unity, you civic leaders urging community action… [beware],” Brent Bozell writes. To the Christian leaders, anxious to show their sympathy, “While you’re sermonizing about the need to show support for their movement, BLM leaders are sermonizing about destroying yours.” Follow LifeNews on the Parler social media network for the latest pro-life news! How many Christians plaster “Black Lives Matter” across their social media pages not realizing that they’re supporting a group that wants to abolish the nuclear family? Or that the movement they’re identifying with justifies cop killings, prostitution, anti-Semitism, anarchy, and the suppression of speech and religion? Too many people have been taken in by this whitewashed version of the BLM movement in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, not realizing the dangerous agenda lurking beneath. That’s a mistake, FRC’s Ken Blackwell argued on “Washington Watch.” “This is about the Left advancing a strategy to fundamentally change our country. And to effect this change, they first want to destroy it. They want to make sure that there is no positive interpretation of our historical narrative that includes anything that makes us uniquely American.” There are a lot of good people in this country who think by embracing this cause and repeating its mantra that they’re somehow ascribing value to the lives of African Americans. Far from it. “Black lives don’t matter to Black Lives Matter,” Ken insists. “It cares about promoting a toxic ideology.” And the church — and more broadly, the nation — need to wake up to that reality. This is a crusade so menacing, Dan McLaughlin points out, that even Democratic leaders “warned their own party privately in 2015 against associating with the group.” Of course, Americans are terrified that if they don’t embrace Black Lives Matter, they’ll be labeled as bigots and racists. The extremists are counting on that fear to give them cover as they march, unchallenged, through our cities. But if Christians and other citizens care about this great nation, they need to take a page out of Sam Coonrod’s book and find their voice. Because if we actually follow this revolution to its conclusion, Mike Gonzalez and Andrew Olivastro warn, black lives — and all lives — would be harmed. “Theirs is a blueprint for misery, not justice. It must be rejected.” LifeNews Note: Tony Perkins is the president of the Family Research Council.

Cancel Culture is a Mighty Tool of Fascism's Advance

Those of us of a certain age remember those grainy, black-and-white films we were shown in school of a spreading ink stain or the tentacles of a giant octopus that represented Communism spreading over Europe and heading our way. Today the advancing fascist, totalitarian state that is coming for us might well be represented as a gigantic Pac-Man figure scurrying around within eating any idea or thought or expression that deviates from or opposes leftism: It's Frost's fog not on tiny cat feet but on steroids, and when it is done it will envelop us all. This Pac-Man figure is: Cancel culture ...the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming. It is led by truly ignorant people who, literally, don't know what they are talking about.  The prime example of which is Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), a cum laude graduate of Boston University majoring in international relations and economics: AOC is but one of the geniuses urging a boycott of Goya Foods because its CEO, Robert Unanue, dared to praise President Trump.  Mr. Unanue, of course, is not alone.  The list is long, from the coaches who use the wrong words, to the proposed rescinding of admission of the student who also praised Mr. Trump (the rescinding has been, for now, aborted),  and even to the canceling of a virtual speech by the President's daughter. That is but a small sample, and readers undoubtedly know of many more that, especially, do not involve the President such as a Superbowl-winning quarterback being forced to grovel for criticizing the practice of kneeling during the anthem.  And, ridiculously, they've canceled The Duke, John Wayne! This is all done, of course, not in the name of fascist totalitarianism but to correct the evils of capitalism or to improve race relations or in the name of some other liberal cause, but I ain't fooled, I think AT readers are not fooled, and surely the great novelist, Sinclair Lewis, wasn't fooled eighty-five years ago when he wrote: “But he saw too that in America the struggle was befogged by the fact that the worst Fascists were they who disowned the word ‘Fascism’ and preached enslavement to Capitalism under the style of Constitutional and Traditional Native American Liberty.”   None of this is new.  In George Orwell's seventy-year-old novel, 1984, the job of Winston Smith, its protagonist, was to rewrite the past.  In Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union his enemies were routinely erased from history. From the time of Horace we know “that even fools are right sometimes,” so I am pained to use the words of a true fool when I say that our rulers cannot be criticized, but they are free to criticize and silence whom they wish. When all opposition is silenced, certainly totalitarianism will prevail. [ ... ] The post Cancel Culture is a Mighty Tool of Fascism's Advance appeared first on NewsCetera.

China’s Ambassador Intervenes in Nepal’s Leadership Struggle

China’s ambassador to Nepal has emerged as a major deal maker in the political duel happening between Nepal’s Prime Minister and the co-chairman of the Nepalese Communist Party that both represent. “China wants the Nepalese Communist Party to continue in power for its benefit,” Dr. S. Chandrasekharan, director of the South Asia Analysis Group, told The Epoch Times over the phone from New Delhi. According to him, after China, North Korea, and Vietnam, Nepal is the country with the largest number of communist party members. Problems appeared in the Nepalese government because of a stalemate between the co-chairman of the Nepalese Communist Party, P.K. Dahal, and the Nepalese Prime Minister, K.P. Sharma Oli and in the first week of July, 31 of the 45 members of the communist party’s standing committee members had asked Oli to step down. The Nepalese Communist Party, an alliance between Nepal’s Maoist former rebels and the liberal Communist UML (Unified-Marxist-Leninist) came to power in May 2018 after defeating the pro-India Nepali Congress Party—a first majority government in 19 years in a nation plagued by unstable coalitions. Due to infighting, this coalition was about to meet the fate of the older coalitions when in the second week of July, the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yonqi held consultations with the leaders of both the fractions and prevented a split, according to various Indian media. The Chinese Embassy in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, described the meetings as part of regular communication, however, experts think otherwise. This is not the first time that Yonqi has intervened in the persisting problems of Nepal’s ruling alliance.  She had earlier on July 5 also talked with senior NCP leader and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and on the same day, she called the Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari, whomIndian media link with the current political crisis. Bhandari, the first woman president of Nepal joined the Communist Party of Nepal-Marxist-Leninist in 1980. “We do not know whether it was the lure of incentives or threat of vulnerabilities that settled the round [in mid-July]. But what is definitely known is that the Chinese had a major role to play in avoiding the bust-up,” Indian national newspaper, the Hindustan Times quoted a western diplomat based in Kathmandu. My point: *China is no more a ‘shy’ power it used to be. It’s a political player, is keen to project its power *Amb Yanqi is politically most visible Chinese Amb Nepal has seen. She speaks English, freely meets political leaders, speaks her mind *China doesn’t want NCP to split https://t.co/lIkzUztlmh — Akhilesh Upadhyay (@akhileshU) July 18, 2020 While under pressure to step down from power, Oli managed to recommend the prorogation (shutting down) of the parliament session on July 2, and his recommendations were approved by Bhandari. Nepalese experts called this move unconstitutional, according to The Kathmandu Post.  Chandrasekharan, who served as an Indian diplomat in Nepal for four years, said Yonqi’s role was decisive in reaching a deal between the two leaders that has enabled the government to still survive. “The active role of the Chinese Ambassador, who met the individual leaders more than once to ensure that the party does not split at any cost due to differences within the top leadership, was decisive. Her approach of unity through continuous dialogue won the day and perhaps that a final outcome should be through a consensus was also her idea,” he wrote in an analysis published on Thursday on the South Asia Analysis Group’s portal. Yonqi, who according to the Hindustan Times has a PLA intelligence background is set to play a greater role in the Nepalese internal politics as the alliance’s standing committee meets on July 28 to decide on the cabinet reshuffle. Another Indian political analyst, Harsh Pant told The Epoch Times over the phone from New Delhi that the CCP may get some leverage in South Asia by the role it is playing in Nepal’s internal politics but there could likely be pitfalls. “The CCP does get some short term advantage but whether it will give it any strategic advantage is not readily evident as an explicit role in government formation in Nepal might make Beijing unpopular in Nepal,” said Pant who works with the Observer’s Research Foundation. Pant said that Yonqi’s is also interested in Nepal’s internal politics because the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Nepalese Communist Party (NCP) share a close connection. Last year, before the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping made his two-day trip to the Himalayan nation, the NCP organized a symposium on “Xi Jinping Thought” and invited CCP party leaders to share the doctrine with 200 members of the NCP, reported the Kathmandu Post that said the activity was part of the Chinese move to export its ideology. The communist Nepalese regime recently also voted in favor of the CCP’s draconian security law in Hong Kong at the UN Human Rights Council.

Germany rejects Trump’s proposal to let Russia back into G7: foreign minister

July 26, 2020 BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany has rejected a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin back into the Group of Seven (G7) most advanced economies, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a newspaper interview published on Monday. Trump raised the prospect last month of expanding the G7 to again include Russia, which had been expelled in 2014 following Moscow’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region. But Maas told Rheinische Post that he did not see any chance for allowing Russia back into the G7 as long as there was no meaningful progress in solving the conflict in Crimea as well as in eastern Ukraine. Russia itself could make the biggest contribution to becoming part of the G7 format again by contributing to a peaceful solution in the Ukraine conflict, Maas said. Russia is still part of the G20, a broader grouping including other emerging-market economies. “G7 and G20 are two sensibly coordinated formats. We don’t need G11 or G12 anymore,” Maas said in reference to Trump’s proposal to invite not only Russia, but other countries to G7 meetings. Maas described the relationship with Russia as “currently difficult” in many areas. “But we also know that we need Russia to solve conflicts such as those in Syria, Libya and Ukraine. That will not work against Russia, but only with Russia.” Germany, which took over the rotating six-month EU presidency on July 1, has taken on a mediating role in the conflict in Libya as well as in Ukraine. “But Russia also has to make its contribution, which is very slow in Ukraine,” Maas said. Cease-Fire in War-Torn Eastern Ukraine to Begin at Midnight

KYIV, Ukraine—Ukrainian and rebel forces in war-torn eastern Ukraine have started preparing for a “full and comprehensive” cease-fire scheduled to begin at midnight, a move that officials hope can lead to more steps to resolve the 6-year-old conflict. Rebel officials said Sunday they have instructed their troops about the cease-fire and issued a decree banning the use of weapons. Ukraine’s military said their forces “have begun preparations” for the ceasefire. (Vitali Komar/AP Photo) If upheld, it would “pave the way for implementing other clauses” of the Minsk peace deal, the office of Ukraine’s president said earlier this week, calling the cease-fire a “breakthrough.” Brokered in 2015 by France and Germany, the Minsk peace plan aimed to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists that flared in 2014 after Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its support for the separatists. The conflict has since killed more than 14,000. Ukrainian soldiers strengthen their front line position in the town of Novoluhanske in the Donetsk region, Ukraine, on Dec. 9, 2019. (Vitali Komar/AP Photo) The presidents of Russia and Ukraine both commended the cease-fire deal in a phone call Sunday and underscored the importance of implementing the agreements reached at the December summit in Paris. Russia President Vladimir Putin expressed concern over Kyiv’s calls to revise the Minsk agreements and said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s “position about the non-alternative nature of the Minsk agreements, once again voiced during this call, should translate into real actions,” the Kremlin said. Zelenskiy in turn, stressed the need “for further practical steps” aimed at releasing Ukrainians who are imprisoned by rebels in eastern Ukraine, in the annexed region of Crimea and in Russia, according to a statement by his office. (Ukrainian Presidential Press Office/AP Photo) The 2015 deal envisaged that Ukraine can regain control over its border with Russia in the separatist-held regions only after they are granted broad self-rule and hold local elections. The accord helped reduce the scope of hostilities, but Ukrainian forces and the rebels have continued to exchange artillery salvos and gunfire. In December, the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany met in Paris for another round of talks, expressing support for the Minsk deal and agreeing to revive the peace process. Zelenskiy, who won the 2019 election on promises to end the conflict, wanted Ukraine to get control of its border first before local elections, but the Kremlin has insisted the deal should be implemented without revisions. The new cease-fire deal was reached Wednesday by members of the Tripartite Contact Group that includes representatives of Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and was welcomed by EU officials. During his traditional Sunday blessing in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis also commended the cease-fire, adding that it needed to be put into practice “to rebuild confidence and lay the foundations for a much needed and long awaited reconciliation with the people.”

UK Defence Secretary says will boost ability to handle space threat from Russia, China

July 25, 2020 (Reuters) – Britain will boost its ability to handle threats posed by Russia and China in space as part of a foreign, security and defence policy review being conducted by the UK government, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said late on Saturday. On Thursday, Britain said it was concerned about a Russian satellite test which involved the launch of a projectile with the “characteristics of a weapon”. “This week we have been reminded of the threat Russia poses to our national security with the provocative test of a weapon-like projectile from a satellite threatening the peaceful use of space”, Wallace wrote in The Sunday Telegraph newspaper, adding that China also posed a threat. “China, too, is developing offensive space weapons and both nations are upgrading their capabilities. Such behaviour only underlines the importance of the review the (UK) government is currently conducting”, he added https://bit.ly/2ZZQ5Ri. The Three Words That Almost Ruined Me As a Writer: ‘Show, Don’t Tell’

When I learned “show, don’t tell,” I thought I’d discovered a guide that would never fail me. And sure, it was good for me, in the way training wheels help in learning to ride a bike. The directive countered a school-based tendency toward abstraction and vagueness. I got firmly on board. I had no idea how much damage those three words would do after I’d depended on them for too long. Detail makes the mimesis machine start. Chicken soup and a broken figurine of a ceramic goose—there, they make a second life happen, built on images. And details—pancakes, clenched fists, rainfall—were all I ever wanted, all I ever hoped for as a writer. The details are divine, and we should caress them, as Nabokov instructed. In many ways, the practice of writing is a practice of learning to re-see the world. “Show, don’t tell” isn’t a way of reframing William Carlos Williams’ “so much depends upon a red wheelbarrow,” or that brilliant phrase “no ideas but in things” from his poem, “Paterson.” I know the real goal of “show, don’t tell” is to force a discipline that encourages the writer to see subjectivity emerging through those details. But that sentence—that command—doesn’t say that. It’s saying specifically don’t tell. And we need to just stop saying it to another generation of writers. I know that many nonfiction and fiction writers, for good reason, tell their students to “show and tell” rather than to simply “show.” In fiction, internal narration—the telling—creates a world, as Steve Almond beautifully describes in his essay, “Let Us Now Praise Unfamous Men,” about the novel Stoner. He recounts a revelation in reading the book: “What matters is not the quality of a particular life, but the quality of attention paid to that life.” This seems to draw us toward “show, don’t tell,” but Almond stresses that Stoner lured him to resist “our readiness to privilege action over contemplation.” If Stoner is showing, it is showing the inner life, the murky boundary of internal action erased by “show, don’t tell.” I tell my students “Show and tell,” and yet even in 2019 I am disturbed by how often they come into my class, having taking fiction first, telling each other in workshop, “Show, don’t tell.” This is in the water of creative writing pedagogy, and we need to end it, because it leaks between genres and becomes a mantra, the easiest and therefore seemingly the most clear, most unquestionable. * In the real world, watching our action would be akin to constant dissociation. Instead, we feel things, we say things to ourselves, and eventually we come upon subject matter and then to the scenes. I came into writing nonfiction already believing that my thoughts were messy, convoluted, and not worth much. I then learned that the things that happened to me, the things in the scenes, were my only material. I had to watch and re-watch the movie of myself from the outside, doing nothing, in moments of great pain that failed to capture the truth of my experience. I looked for important actions in my life—things like burning down the barn or shaving a dying man or catching a trout and gutting it, man things—and saw nothing. I saw a girl crying a lot....[   ] The post The Three Words That Almost Ruined Me As a Writer: ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ appeared first on NewsCetera.

Democrats Pass Bill Forcing Americans to Fund Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz

House Democrats approved a massive spending bill Friday that would reverse pro-life actions by President Donald Trump and force Americans to fund the Planned Parenthood abortion chain. The appropriations bill passed in a 244-189 party-line vote in the Democrat-controlled House. Within it are multiple measures to undermine pro-life policies and executive actions that protect unborn babies and mothers and prevent tax dollars from being used for abortions. Among these are President Donald Trump’s Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy, which ensures tax dollars are not being used to promote or provide abortions overseas. It defunded the International Planned Parenthood Federation of about $100 million and a British-based abortion chain of about $73 million. But if the bill ultimately succeeds, that policy could be greatly undermined. Prior to the vote, U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, a New Jersey pro-life Republican, spoke out for unborn babies and mothers on the House floor. Click here to sign up for pro-life news alerts from LifeNews.com “Someday, future generations of Americans will look back on us and wonder how and why a society that prided itself on its commitment to human rights precluded virtually all protection to the weakest and most vulnerable: unborn children,” Smith said. Texas U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess also criticized Democrats for including pro-abortion “poison pills” in the bill. “We could have had a bipartisan bill to provide for the American people,” Burgess said. “These poison pill provisions virtually guarantee that that will not be the case.” The Democrats’ legislation goes back on an agreement between Democrats and Republicans, Trump and House and Senate leaders earlier this year not to include poison pill provisions in appropriations bills for 2020 and 2021. Other “poison pills” that Democrats added to the bill include appropriating $55.5 million for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which the Trump administration defunded because of its links to forced and coerced abortions and sterilizations in China. The bill also weakens the Kemp-Kasten Amendment, which restricts funds to groups that support or advocate for coerced abortions and/or sterilizations, often as a means of population control. “It is imperative that pro-life policies such as the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance Program and the Kemp-Kasten Amendment are protected,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “United States taxpayer money should not become a weapon in the arsenal of pro-abortion groups as they seek to destroy the sovereignty of nations opposed to abortion on demand.” Tobias said the pro-life policies that Democrat leaders are trying to end also prevent taxpayer funding to groups that pressure other countries to legalize abortion on demand. “Abortion groups and their allies are willing to trample the laws of sovereign nations and place women and their children in harm’s way— all in an effort to create a global ‘right’ to abortion,” Tobias said. The legislation is not likely to pass the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate, and Trump has promised to veto any legislation that would weaken federal pro-life policy. But Smith expressed outrage that any lawmaker would support abortions. He describe how abortions involve “dismembering a child with razor-sharp knives, pulverizing an infant with powerful suction devices, or chemically poisoning a baby with any number of toxic ‘medications.’” He urged his fellow lawmakers to support programs that really help women and children in need by providing maternal and prenatal care, nutrition and basic health care. “No one is expendable or a throwaway,” Smith said. “Birth is merely an event, albeit an important one, in the life of a child. … vulnerable unborn children and their mothers absolutely deserve respect, protection and an abundance of compassion.”

Taylor Swift changes it up with ‘Folklore’ and earns rave reviews

July 24, 2020 LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Taylor Swift on Friday won some of the best reviews of her career with an album produced entirely during the coronavirus crisis that breaks new ground for the Grammy-winning artist. “Folklore” features the 30-year-old singer, who began as a country star then turned to pop, showing a quieter indie folk sensibility that took fans and music critics by surprise. Rolling Stone said the album, with dreamy forest cover art, contained “the most head-spinning, heart-breaking, emotionally ambitious songs of her life.” “‘Folklore’ really feels like the debut album of a whole new Swift,” the music publication said. The album went to No. 1 on the worldwide iTunes chart within hours of its release. Working with alternative artist Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner, guitarist with indie rock band The National, the 16 songs on “Folklore” arrived with just 24 hours advance notice. Its release comes less than a year after Swift’s 2019 album “Lover,” which included the dancy lead single “Me!” Swift said that while in isolation because of the coronavirus pandemic “my imagination has run wild and this album is the result, a collection of songs and stories that flowed like a stream of consciousness. Picking up a pen was my way of escaping into fantasy, history, and memory.” Billboard called “Folklore” a “daring new vision of her artistry without a bad song in the batch,” while the Los Angeles Times called it the perfect quarantine album. Variety said it was “hard to remember any contemporary pop superstar that has indulged in a more serious, or successful, act of sonic palate cleansing.” Swift rose to fame as a 16-year-old, whose intense lyrics about first love and alienation resonated with teen girls. Now a 10-time Grammy winner, she turned to pop in 2014 and showed a darker side in 2017 album “Reputation,” in which she took aim at critics with songs like “Look What You Made Me Do.” (Reporting by Jill Serjeant; Editing by Tom Brown)

In disputed Kashmir, Pakistan accuses India of increased shelling

ICYMI: July 23, 2020 By Charlotte Greenfield CHIRIKOT SECTOR, Pakistan (Reuters) – Pakistan’s military this week said there had been an escalation in firing and shelling across the de facto border that separates Pakistani and Indian-controlled Kashmir, at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours. Major General Amer Ahsan Nawaz, the commander of Pakistani troops in Kashmir, accused the Indian military of trying to distract attention from unrest in its part of Kashmir. “If you compare it to the past years, there is a definite increase in this year,” he told reporters on Wednesday near the so-called Line of Control (Loc), across which the two sides’ militaries have faced off for decades. The Muslim-majority Himalayan region has been at the heart of more than 70 years of animosity since the partition of British-ruled India into Muslim Pakistan and majority Hindu India in 1947. Two of the three wars they have fought since have been over Kashmir. Pakistan’s military said that in 2019, when ceasefire violations hit a more than decade-high peak, there were just over 3,500 incidents. Already in 2020 there have been almost 1,800 violations, the Pakistan military said, adding that the surge during the more volatile summer season since June had been more pronounced than in previous years. Indian army spokesman Colonel Aman Anand rejected Pakistan’s allegations, saying Pakistan’s military had violated the ceasefire on more than 2,500 occasions this year. Tensions were exacerbated last year when India revoked the autonomy of its portion of Kashmir. In recent months the diplomatic relationship has worsened further as Delhi and Islamabad each ejected half of its neighbour’s diplomats. On Pakistan’s side of Kashmir, which is relatively heavily populated close to the LoC, locals said that shelling or firing was becoming a near-daily occurrence. “It can start any time day or night,” said Malik Mohammad Ayub, a local deputy commissioner, who said around four civilians were killed and 13 wounded in his district since he took the job four months ago. Faiza Shabbir, 12, said she and her sisters had been afraid when shelling began in their area earlier this month. “Firing was going on, so we hid in our house, then a shell hit our roof. Three of us sisters and our grandmother were injured,” she said, adding that had spent four days in hospital being treated for shrapnel wounds. Life’s a beach, but some European countries have new COVID-19 fears

July 24, 2020 By Caroline Copley and Nerijus Adomaitis BERLIN/OSLO (Reuters) – With the summer vacation season in full swing Germany, France and Norway are taking measures to try to stop people returning from holidays abroad from spreading the coronavirus. The new restrictions, imposed as countries worry about a second COVID-19 wave, could dampen desire to travel abroad and deal a severe blow to Spain’s tourism sector, which accounts for some 12% of the country’s economic output. Norway said it will re-impose a 10-day quarantine requirement for people arriving from Spain from Saturday, while France advised people not to travel to the Spanish region of Catalonia. Germany said it will offer returning holidaymakers free coronavirus tests. Spain has begun a tentative tourism reopening after a dismal first half of the year. But it has also seen a rise in infections in recent weeks and regional authorities across the country have introduced new restrictions as they seek to stamp out the surge. In France, authorities are especially worried about Catalonia, the northeastern region that includes Barcelona and many popular holiday spots. “Concerning the situation in Catatonia, which is displaying worsened indicators for infection, we strongly encourage French citizens to avoid going there until the health situation improves,” Prime Minister Jean Castex told reporters. Germany will offer all travelers returning from countries designated high-risk a free coronavirus test or oblige them to stay at home for two weeks. Spain is not on the high-risk list but German health officials urged people coming home from holidays in party destinations there and elsewhere to get themselves tested within three days. Videos in recent weeks of unruly behaviour by some Germans on the Spanish island of Mallorca and in Bulgaria has raised concerns that holidaymakers are at increased risk of infection that could be brought back home. “The current infection figures show once again that we are still in the middle of the corona pandemic,” Health Minister Jens Spahn said in a statement. “And increasing travel increases the risk of more infections being brought back into Germany.” Germany has designated 130 countries as high-risk, including Turkey, Egypt and the United States. Arrivals from that list who cannot show a negative test result are already required to go into quarantine for 14 days. German authorities said they will cover the cost of the tests in the first instance and are instructing airport operators to set up testing facilities. Irony Award: Predominantly White MLB “Takes Knee” For Social Justice

In a highly hypocritical move designed to pander to popular opinion, MLB managers and players kneeled during the national anthem this week, supposedly to show their support for racial justice. Among the kneelers were San Francisco manager Gabe Kapler and several Dodgers — including NL MVP Cody Bellinger and three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. “I wanted to demonstrate my dissatisfaction with our clear systemic racism in our country and I wanted them (players) to know that they got to make their own decisions and we would respect and support those decisions,” Kapler parroted after Monday’s game. “I wanted them to feel safe in speaking up.” The hypocrisy is astonishing given that baseball has had a decline in the number of Black players for the last several decades, and is currently at a measly 8% of the entire MLB. Latino players comprise the greatest proportion of minority players within the MLB at around 28%. One notable fan who is finished with MLB is President Donald Trump, who wrote on Twitter Tuesday morning: “Looking forward to live sports, but any time I witness a player kneeling during the National Anthem, a sign of great disrespect for our Country and our Flag, the game is over for me!” It remains to be seen whether other MLB fans will put up with these hypocritical and unpatriotic displays. FBI interviewing Chinese visa holders across U.S. about possible military ties: Justice Department

July 23, 2020 By Lisa Lambert WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The FBI has interviewed visa holders it believes to secretly be members of the Chinese military in more than two dozen U.S. cities, the Justice Department said on Thursday. The department said it has arrested three Chinese nationals for visa fraud, while a fourth remains a fugitive staying at China’s consulate in San Francisco. The United States believes the four were members of China’s military posing as researchers. “In interviews with members of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army in over 25 cities across the U.S., the FBI uncovered a concerted effort to hide their true affiliation to take advantage of the United States and the American people,” John Brown, executive assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s national security branch, said in a statement. Court filings show that the FBI believed the San Francisco consulate was harboring a fugitive since late June. U.S. law enforcement cannot enter a foreign embassy or consulate unless invited, and certain top officials such as ambassadors have diplomatic immunity.

With no Brits, cash-strapped Algarve fights for survival

July 23, 2020 By Catarina Demony VILAMOURA, Portugal (Reuters) – In his near-empty pub in the Algarve in southern Portugal, Samuel Tilley is fuming that coronavirus regulations in his home country Britain are keeping tourists away, further jeopardizing an already gloomy summer season. Usually packed with tourists at this time of the year, Vilamoura is quiet, leaving bar staff at Tilley’s O’Neills pub without much to do but brood over Britain’s decision to leave Portugal off a list of more than 50 countries safe enough for travel without restrictions. “It was very shocking. I don’t believe there’s any logic behind it,” Tilley said, while keeping an eye out for the rare thirsty customer walking in to have a refreshing pint by the harbour. “There are some wonderful people here in the Algarve and beyond and I feel this decision by the British government really hurt them.” Portugal initially won praise for its quick response to the pandemic but a persistent count of several hundred new cases per day concentrated in and around Lisbon in the past two months has worried authorities at home and abroad, leading Britain and other European nations to impose restrictions on travel from the southern European nation. Last year, Portugal welcomed about 2 million Britons, with 64% of them heading to the sunny Algarve, famed for its sandy beaches and golf courses. So far in 2020, only 92,000 Britons have made it the region. Sunbeds are left empty and lonely waiters stand outside restaurants with menus in hand but no holidaymakers to speak to. “It used to be so busy that you would stand shoulder to shoulder,” Welsh tourist Nadine said as she walked around nearly empty streets in nearby Albufeira. Eliseu Correia, head of the Algarve-based destination management company EC Travel, said not being included in the British safe travel list had been devastating for his business, with revenues dropping around 60% this year compared to 2019. “It is obviously a tremendous hit on everybody,” he said. “We had no revenue in March, April, May, June…so we were counting on that.” SILVER LINING? Britons pumped around 3.2 billion euros into Portugual’s economy last year and without that cash, the Algarve’s businesses, which mainly rely on the busy summer months to make ends meet, will find themselves in a tight spot. The travel list, which allows holidaymakers to dodge a 14-day quarantine upon returning home, is expected to be reviewed by next Monday but, even if Portugal is put on the list then, it might be too late. “It is obvious part of the damage can’t be reversed,” said Eliderico Viegas, President of Algarve’s AHETA hotel association. “Many people have already opted for other destinations.” On average, the Algarve’s hotels, which are usually fully booked in July and August, are currently surviving with only 40% occupancy, according to AHETA. The Algarve saw its number of registered unemployed in June rise 231% compared to the same period last year, increasing from around 8,000 to more than 26,000 people. Most relied on the so-called seasonal jobs, which were wiped out as demand collapsed and businesses closed doors. The government has acknowledged the Algarve needs urgent help, and announced on Tuesday it would spend 300 million euros to support its struggling economy. Francisco Melo, who runs boat tours along the coast, says his business is making 20% less compared to 2019. But there is a silver lining to how quiet things are, which he hopes will in turn help bring tourists back: “Things are hard but the sea is full of life, with dolphins, tuna, horse mackerel. We have never seen the sea like this.” (Reporting by Catarina Demony, Miguel Pereira and Rafael Marchante in Vilamoura; Additional reporting by Victoria Waldersee; Writing by Catarina Demony; Editing by Ingrid Melander and Angus MacSwan)
